CCI Volunteer Experiences
Madi 2021
Even though we were in the middle of a pandemic, I knew I need to get out and serve. I had always wanted to go a Gap Year before medical school to see the world and help others. CCI gave me the opportunity to be immersed in the Dominican culture, even if it was limited due to COVID restrictions. I was able to improve my Spanish while living with a host family. I also served as an intern in the hospital. A local church accepted me into their youth group and I saw first hand how God is working everywhere. It was a challenging, but awesome experience!

In the summer of 2012 I was 21 years old. I was looking to get out in the world and do something meaningful. I got in touch with Angela Bennett who offered me an opportunity to do volunteer work with Community Connection International in the Dominican Republic in the town of Consuelo. I stayed in the Consuelo for about a month and a half. I worked at a nearby CCI literacy center every day helping kids with their reading. In my free time, I had a lot of fun too. I was able to visit numerous beaches and sites in the area. I stayed with a wonderful host family that treated me as their own. They did everything they could to make me feel welcome and at home. I also made many friends that I still stay in touch with today. It’s been 8 years since my time in Consuelo. I look back on that time there very fondly and I’ll never forget my experiences there.
